Dorothy Dandridge

American actress, dancer, and singer Dorothy Jean Dandridge was born November 9, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was 5’5” tall (1.65 m). She is best known for becoming the first African American actress to be nominated for an Oscar.

Unlucky in love, Dandridge was twice divorced.  Her first husband was dancer and entertainer Harold Nicholas. In 1942, she gave birth to her only child, Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas, whose 2003 death was unconfirmed.

Renowned for beauty and charm, Dorothy was the first actress to be considered for the part of Cleopatra, but the part was later awarded to Elizabeth Taylor. In many of her roles, she was scantily clad.  In Tamango, the script called for her to swim in the nude. She objected and stood firm until the script was rewritten.  It was the first time she would stand up against the inequality she experienced in Hollywood. Later became a civil rights activist, supporting both the NAACP and National Urban League.

Despite her many accomplishments in her professional career, she ultimately lost her fortune, due to unscrupulous management. She died deeply in debt on September 8, 1965. Her death due to drug overdose was ruled accidental. At the time of her death, her net worth was less than $100.

Dandridge’s favorite perfume was Dana Tabu.
