Humphrey DeForest Bogart was an American film and stage actor who was born December 25, 1899 in New York City. His parents were Belmont DeForest Bogart, a surgeon, and Maud Hemphrey, an illustrator, magazine art director and women’s rights crusader. He had two younger sisters.

His mother was a very successful illustrator, earning more than $1.5 million, in today’s money. As a surgeon, his father earned more than $600,000 in today’s money. His wealthy parents frequently fought, and neither he nor his sisters received much affection from either parent. Despite his many financial advantages, he was expelled from several schools, including Yale.

Later in life, Bogart was enormously successful in Hollywood, receiving more than three Academy Awards. He appeared in more than seventy films.
